Tottenham Hotspur football club is also known by the nickname Spurs. They are based at White Hart Lane, in a borough of London called Haringey. Tottenham Hotspur FC is a member of the Premier League. An interesting fact about the team is their motto, which is "Audere est Facere" and means "To Dare Is To Do." Over their history trheir most bitter rivalry has been with Arsenal in the North London Derby.
Tottenham Hotspur was founded in 1882. Its name was officially coined in 1884; it was very originally called the Hotspur Football Club, but as there was another London team called London Hotspur, the name was changed in order to avoid any confusion.
Spurs have won many honours through the years but are most associated with the FA Cup. In their early history their silverware was a little more diverse however. In 1900, they won the Southern League title. This was quickly followed by winning the FA Cup in the following year; upon winning the cup, the team director's wife tied some ribbon to the cup, beginning a tradition which continues to this very day in English football.
After a few more exciting victories, the Tottenham had some quiet years between 1910 and the First World War. When football resumed after that conflict, in 1919, Spurs were division two champions during the first season between 1919 and 1920, then won their second FA Cup in 1921 after an exciting game.
Sadly, the Spurs suffered a decline after this point and ended up in relegation in the year 1928. Game play was then suspended for World War II. After the war finished, Tottenham Hotspur rose to eminence around the 1949-1950 season and won the First Division Championship in the year 1951.
Various events, including injuries and aging issues, caused Spurs again to fall into a kind of slump over the ensuing years. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Tottenham went on to win a number of trophies. These included the FA Cup (again), a semi final in the European Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup. Not to rest on its laurels, Tottenham Hotspur FC then racked up the UEFA and League Cups over this period of time as well. Unfortunately, during the 1976-1977 season Spurs were relegated from the top flight English football.
At the beginning of the 1980s, the Tottenham Hotspur were able to again reach the 1st Division and had a great winning streak. They managed to snag an FA Cup yet again. The Heysel disaster put a great and terrible damper on the sport for quite a long time, and caused Tottenham to miss out on a potential UEFA cup place to boot.
The 1990s saw the club join the Premier League, during the Premier League years Spurs have been consistently a mid table team. Something that has angered the Spurs fans who have had to witness the relative success of Arsenal over those same years. A breakthrough was made in 2007 when Spurs won the League Cup against their other bitter rivals Chelsea. This may have proved to be a false dawn because in the 2008 Premier League there are fighting relegation under new manager Harry Redknap.
Tottenham Hotspur have proved themselves to be an excellent cup team, capable of beating anybody on any given day. It’s just their form is so inconsistent. This may be part of the reason why when picking football matches to show live Tottenham Hotspur perhaps do not get as much coverage as their history (and fans) would deserve.
