Manchester United Football Club is an English Premiership football club, based at Old Trafford in Manchester. The club is one of the most successful clubs in England, having won the FA Premier League/Football League seventeen times, FA Cup eleven times and the European Cup/UEFA Champions League three. Man Utd's greatest period of success came in the 1990s and early 2000s, when Sir Alex Ferguson guided them to eight league championships in eleven years. The club had been run as a Public Limited Company since 1991, and a takeover was a real possiblility. An attempted takeover by Rupert Murdoch had been blocked by the British Government in 1999, but in 2005 Malcolm Glazer completed a hostile takeover of the club, despite considerable protests from many of Manchester United's supporters. In protest a group of break away supporters formed FC United Of Manchester (or FCUM for short). However as much as the atmosphere at Old Trafford has changed Manchester United under the Glazers have continued to go from strength to strength winning the Premier League title for the last 3 seasons in a row. If Manchester United can win it again this year it will make it a record 4th title, they will be the first club in history to win 4 top tier English football titles in a row. Something that will really annoy Liverpool fans!

Manchester United pipped Liverpool to the title last season and were well beaten in the Champions League final by Barcelona. Some people thought that Manchester United appeared to be crawling over the line last year so with the loss of both Ronaldo and Tevez for the 2009/2010 campaign there will be a lot of people interested in how United get on.
