Liverpool and Arsenal, it's not a rivalry that invokes images of fire and brimstone but for the football purist a game between these two "footballing" teams usually takes some beating. Whilst Liverpool are the more successful team in terms of both domestic British football and European glory Arsenal have certainly had the greater success in the Premier League over the last decade.

If you go back 20 years to 1989 Liverpool and Arsenal provided the most exciting end to a a top tier English football season in history. Arsenal's Michael Thomas broke Scouse hearts with the final kick of the game to score Arsenals second goal and secure the 1st Division title. In more recent times games between Liverpool and Arsenal seem to have been a tale of 2 parts. When it comes to the Premier League Liverpool tend to come out on top, perhaps memorably upset in 2009 when Arsenal through Andre Arshavin (with 4 goals) managed an amazing 4-4 draw at Anfield to all but finish Liverpool's title hopes. On the other hand in Cup games Arsenal seem to consistently come out on top.

It's been a relatively poor season for both Arsenal and Liverpool. Looking at Liverpool first, they are out of every competition except the Europa League and all they can possibly hope for in the Premier League is a fourth place finish? They have begun to pick up a bit since Christmas and the 1-0 victory after going down to 10 men against Everton at the weekend was a really gutsy performance. It's been enough for some of their supporters to see the 3rd place currently occupied by Arsenal as a realistic target. This game will be put up or shut up time. Arsenal on the other hand have gone from Premier League title hopefuls to 3rd place hangers on in the space of only a few days. A home defeat by Manchester United followed by an away loss to Chelsea all but finished their title aspirations and perhaps more worryingly revealed the true 1 dimensional nature of Arsene Wengers team. The football they played against Chelsea in particular was fantastic to watch but ultimately non effective. Will they do any better at home against Liverpool?
