Everton are a member of the English Premier League and was first founded back in 1878. This club was originally known as St. Domingo but the name was changed to Everton in honour of the surrounding area just one year later. It has been known by that name ever since. The Everton FC was one of the founding teams of the Football League in the year 1888. They won their first League Championship during the 1890 to 1891 season. The biggest rivalry that Everton have is with their local rivals Liverpool FC, whom they compete against in the Merseyside Derby. The club have been based at Goodison Park since 1892.
In the first quarter of the twentieth century, Everton won several honours including the League Championship a couple of times, and the FA Cup. In 1927, though, a true winning streak for the team began in earnest. This was considered one of the most successful periods in Everton’s Club's history. After winning their third League Championship, the team stumbled and was briefly relegated to the Second Division around 1930. They quickly rebounded, however.
During 1931 to 1932 season Everton won its fourth league title, followed by a second FA Cup in the 1932-1933 season. The team was undoubtedly on fire during this time. During 1938-1939, the club won its fifth League Championship and the streak finally ended. After World War II interrupted and suspended league play, the team came back much weaker.
Everton FC again was in an upswing beginning in the early sixties. They won the First Division and had quite a few thrilling victories during that period. Its most successful era, however, was undoubtedly began in 1983, when they won the FA Cup followed by two League Titles in the 1984-1985 and 1986-1987 seasons. Everton seemed to be unbeatable during this period of time, and fans were undoubtedly thrilled with their success. It was a great time to be a blue nose in Liverpool They also won what up until now is their only European title with the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1984 to 1985 season.
There were more occasional ups and downs for Everton during the 1990s and early twenty-first century. They were also founding members of the Premier League in 1992, a very historic event in English football history. They had some minor losses and some pretty significant wins following that. This all then culminated in the club's qualification for the UEFA Cup in the 2006-2007 season.
Despite being considered by many to be the poor relatives of their close rivals Liverpool, Everton have an avid following of very loyal fans mostly based in the North West of England, but Everton fans can be found all over the world.
Everton have always been in the Premier League, it's been close a couple of times but even with restricted finances they always seem to keep going.
