Birmingham City actually formed a football club in 1875 by a group of cricketers with the Holy Church in Bordesley Green. It was common during that time period for the origin of football clubs to lie within the church.
Originally the club was known as the Small Health Alliance. In 1885 the club became a professional football club. It wasn’t until 1905 that the club adopted their new name Birmingham Football Club. Finally they became Birmingham City Football Club in 1943.
Although Birmingham City FC has spent much of their football years in the top tier of English football they spent from 1986 to 2002 trying to regain their position. This dark spell did include being in the third tier twice while in the English League. It must be noted that they won the Football League Trophy twice.
As with any football club, Birmingham City FC has a major rivalry with the teams closest to them. This fierce rivalry with Aston Villa is deep rooted.
Over the years the Birmingham has won many trophies. They were Finalists in the FA Cup in 1931, 1956. In 1963 they won the Leaders Cup while in 2001 they were a Finalist. They became Division Two Champions in 1893, 1921, 1948, 1955.
At the end of 2008-2009 Birmingham FC finished their sixth season in the Premier League. Perhaps even more remarkably Birmingham remains the only club to be debt free as of 2009.
